Mr Butt received his basic and specialist orthopaedic training in the south east, west midlands and St Mary's Hospital, London before joining Dudley as a consultant in 1994.
He has visited several UK and international centres of shoulder and elbow surgery. He has been an instructor on fracture fixation, arthroplasty and minor surgical skills courses for surgical trainees and GPs. He is invited as international faculty to lecture and do workshops on upper limb surgery. He is a Fellow of the British Orthopaedic Association, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the British Elbow & Shoulder Society.
He has been involved in mentoring post-graduates in their masters thesis and contributed in nationwide research on rotator cuff repair (UKUFF), shoulder arthroscopy (CSAW) and frozen shoulder (UkFROST).
